Shanghai Dialect for Foreigners
It’s hard to get your hands on learning material for Shanghainese as an English speaker, so I bought up everything I could find on Amazon. This was one of the first books I found.
It’s a great start! It has useful dialog and vocab and audio to accompany everything. 20 chapters, all of them useful – sentences, dialogues and vocab.
The one drawback is that it uses it’s own romanization system for pronunciation which when used alongside the audio is fine, otherwise you will sound horrible. If you are a language-learner who had good success with phonetics/romanization, e.g. pinyin, this book isn’t that great in that aspect… but you can compensate through the provided audio.
The earlier edition, which is also sold on Amazon, foreigners learning Shanghai dialect (with CD) (non-pocket edition) is awesome in this respect, because it romanizes in IPA. I will write a separate review for that edition.
